Panama vibrates to the sound of the music made by her people, and the assortment of sounds you will hear are as varied as the demographics. While most people listen to salsa or tipico but prefer to dance to merengue, young kids blast reggaeton from the windows of their tricked-out cars, thousands of couples ring in the New Year with live music from Samy & Sandra Sandoval and the "Accordion King" Osvaldo Ayala. Panama's jazz scene is strong and growing thanks to the efforts of the Danilo Perez Foundation. Occasionally big name bands stop by (usually for the money), and Panama has been played by Sting, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, and Ricky Martin. The homegrown (excellent) rock band Cage9 comes back every once in awhile, and emerging rock bands experiment at La Casona in Casco Viejo. By Ayala Ben-Yehuda LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The newest face of Latin rhythmic music comes with several twists: He hails from Panama, not Puerto Rico; he calls his style romantic reggae, not reggaeton; and in Mexico, where his success has given him entry to the U.S. market, he calls himself Nigga. Felix Danilo Gomez, 27, who says his nickname came from a Panamanian singer's observation that "I sang like a black guy from Jamaica," has had the No. 1 song on Mexican radio for the past 10 weeks with "Te Quiero," according to Nielsen Music Control. His self-titled album, released by EMI Televisa, climbed to No. 1 on the Mexican sales charts last month, with sales of more than 50,000 copies, according to trade group Amprofon. (more)

By PATRA KASTANOPOLOUS for Panama-Guide.com - How many times can you hear Rod Richards and John Brock perform their original song, HOW MANY TIMES, before the lyrics and melody take up permanent residence in your gray matter? One time, my friends, one time. After the last successful gig of BITCHES GHOST on November 24th, an audience member came rushing out the door babbling, “Where can I buy the CD with that song on it?” His eyes were glazed like an addict in need of a perpetual fix.

By Len Mewhinney Panama-Guide.com - This group play excellent reggae like Tom Marley Wednesdays at the Sahara Club just off Calle Uruguay across from Gaucho's Steak House. The lead singer is Ed King, and they really get the audience involved. They set up around midnight and start their first session around 12:30. The Panama beer is inexpensive - $2.00 a bottle, and the Sahara is very modern and clean. The audience is mixed with Panamanians, gringos and very good looking Colombianas. Now some of the gals from Colombia are looking for sponsors to continue their education in medical school or other professions. Everybody has a great time.....it really is worth a couple of visits - or more.
