Panama To Lift Ban On US Beef
PANAMA CITY (AP)--Panama is lifting its ban on U.S. beef that was prompted by the discovery of mad-cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the Agriculture Ministry announced on Wednesday. Beef from animals aged 30 months or more, and high-risk pieces such as meat from the head will still be banned, said Laurentino Cortizo, minister of agricultural development. The action is to take effect within a few days.
The ban was imposed on July 5 following the discovery of a second case of mad cow disease in the U.S.
Panama imports about 12,000 pounds of U.S. beef yearly.
