ETESA Hydrometeorology Management Weather Website

WeatherThis webpage is produced by the Direction of Hydrometeorology of Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica S.A. (ETESA). They work together with people from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hidrology (INAMHI). "The Department of Meteorology is in charge of processing and registering the information generated in the network of meteorological stations in the country, and of planning, coordinating and projecting the national researches on meteorology and the issuing of weather forecasts. It is also in charge of the meteorological watch in our country. It acts as a link with the National (organizations.)

During the winter ofNorth Hemisphere, coldair masses denominated polar thrusts are displaced frequently from east to west in the mid latitudes.Like divisory borders between the cold and hot air masses it is found a cold front.

Some of the cold fronts got to penetrate up to Central America in the period included between November and April, but frequently in January,

The weather associated with the cold fronts in Panama is characterized for an increase of the wind velocity with north direction, thetemperaturedoes not present a significant variation, that could be feel in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui.

On the Atlantic Watershed, this is associated with weak to moderate rains.On the Pacific Watershed the dry and windy season present some rainfalls in the zones near to the mountain range.

The weather normal conditions will prevail in Panama during the month of January;heavy showers are develop mainly in the western zone of the Atlantic Watershed, by the influence of the front systemsprojected up to Central America region; on the Pacific Watershed some rains could be present by the influence of local brezees,product of diurnal warm of the surface .

The transition is a period between summer and winter, that could last two or more weeks.It is characterized by an alternability between dry and rainy periods, where the dry periods gradually becomelongerand the rainy ones become shorter The beginning ofdry and rainy seasons have changed through the years.

It is important to have present the climatic conditions in order to define the beginning of the TRANSITION in the region:

The high pressures in the Atlantic.
The intertropical convergence zone, displaced to the Equator;
Changing inclination of the sun.
The migration of the wind belts
The stratospheric winds.
Advection of weak humidity comingfrom the sea.
Strong shears in high.
High levels of evaporation.
Increase of superficial and sea temperature.
This point out a persistence to a dry season.
