Tyler associated ‘Fire Fighter’ with ‘gets attention’. What got missed was Tyler’s fear of heights. What also got missed was Tyler’s creative imagination and his love for writing. A hero like Uncle didn’t let fear of heights get in the way, and didn’t spend time on silly stuff like writing stories.
Tyler became a Fire Fighter. A few years into the job, he had a nervous breakdown and had to re-evaluate what was important to him.
Sounds traumatic, doesn’t it?
If you look at the situation from another perspective, you may see the opportunity in Tyler’s difficult situation. Taking the time to answer the question, “What do I want to do with my life?” Is a something everyone has access to, but only a few adventurous souls allow themselves to answer.
Being happy and healthy means answering the question before the life makes it absolutely necessary.
The exciting thing about answering the question, “What do I want to do with my life?” is:
- Once you know how to start asking the question, the answers become deeper.
- You get more and more juice out of your days, and even adversities become plays that allow you to go deeper into the awareness of experience.
- You can have everything you want.
- You can live your life according to your own rules
- You can redefine and bring resonance into the here and now
- You choose happiness
- You avoid emotional and physical problems
So how can you start answering the question?
One way is to start asking the question. As soon as your eyes open in the morning, ask the question: “What do I want to do with my life?” Pay attention to what shows up in your days. You can do this by journaling or free writing. You will notice surprising revelations showing up in the pages and during your day. Do this over a period of 6 weeks or more.
Another way is to mine Peak Experiences. Pay attention to thoughts and feelings. What are you doing? Who are you with? Have someone debrief the experience and ask questions that put you into ‘feeling’ and ‘being’ states. An ally who is willing to listen entirely for your agenda is valuable in this process.
Another means of answering this question are focused Life Resonance Discovery and Planning Sessions. Using tools and exercises, these sessions increase awareness about yourself and your thoughts about life. You get to look at the influences of your past, your generation, the present and your future. You become aware of the Inner Critic and how it operates in your life. You also become aware of your Authentic Self and learn to act from a place of resonance. The sessions lead to enlightened ways of viewing alternatives and making decisions.
