Post-Panamax Vessel Construction

One of the central justifications presented by the Panama Canal Authority to support their reasoning is current trends in shipbuilding. I did a quick Google pull on "post-panamax teu" and came up with this report on the Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. Since the shipyard was rebuilt and from 1962 they built about 150 ships and tankers, and "Panamax" vessels capable of moving 3500 TEU until the mid 1990's. Since 1996 they have built or plans to built another 60 "post-panamax" ships and "ultra-panamax" ships capable of carrying as many as 10,000 TEU or almost three times the carrying capacity of the M-class 3,500 TEU vessels like the 'Margrethe Mærsk'. The trend is clearly toward much bigger ships as manufacturers continue to seek economies of scale in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Bigger ships translate into falling prices at Walmart. Odense Steel Shipyard (Danish: Odense Staalskibsværft) located in Odense, Denmark was constructed in 1918-1919 by the A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group. A new yard with bigger and better facilites was constructed 1957-1959 on a new site located in Munkebo a few kilometres outside of Odense proper. The last two years Odense Steel Shipyard have had a negative budget line and if the shipyard doesn't presents a positive budget line the shipyard will be closed in 2008.
The original shipyard remained in operation until 1966 when all operations were transferred to the new site. Unlike the modern shipyard, the old yard produced civilian and merchant vessels only. Its first completed ship was cargo steamship Robert Mærsk, completed in 1920. Its last production was no. 177, bulkcarrier Laura Mærsk.

The new Odense Steel Shipyard (the "Lindø" Yard)
The new shipyard originally had two building docks no. I and II (300 x 45 x 7,5 metres each) allowing the construction of tankers with up to 100,000 tdw. The Yard was enlarged in 1967 including a new very large building dock No. III (415 x 90 metres) and a great 800 ton., 95 Meters high, 148,5 Meters span gantry crane was added allowing the construction of tankers in VLCC and ULCC class. The largest construction planned on the yard were two 500,000 tdw tankers, but this order was later cancelled. From the 1960's until 1977 the yard only constructed oil-tankers (no larger than 330,000 tdw.) as well as bulk carriers. The first RORO ship was built in 1979, and the first container ship in 1980. In Dec. 1992, the yard completed the world's first 300,000 tdw double-hull tanker. In Jan.1996 they delivered its first Post-Panamax container ship. In Dec.1999 the gantry crane crashed after a hurricane in the building dock and damaged the ship newbuilding No.170, which must repaired and delivered two month later. MAN-TAKRAF; Leipzig / Germany deliverd a new 1000 ton., 110 Meter high ganty crane in April 2001.
