Renan "Bam Bam" Acosta Loses Bid for WBA Featherweight Title

Sports Section JAKARTA, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Chris John beat Renan Acosta of Panama on Saturday to retain his WBA featherweight crown on a unanimous points decision after the Indonesian had to go the full 12 rounds. John, known as the "Dragon", broke through with a fine right hand from early on in the first round and the speed of his punches constantly troubled the title contender. The taller Panamanian did most of his work on the body and was warned for a low punch at one point on the cropped-haired Indonesian. John looked to have his opponent in trouble in the eighth round with an explosive combination of punches but he could not press home his advantage to the disappointment of the home crowd in sweltering heat in Jakarta's Soemantri Brodjonegoro stadium. The 26-year-old, who is also an exponent of the Chinese martial art wushu, has held the WBA featherweight title since 2003. (Source)
