Home Invasion Nets $100,000 in Jewelry

Crime & Punishment This morning four masked men entered a home on Albrook and stole the safe which contained more than $100,000 in jewelry, watches, and valuables. The owners of the house recently arrived in Panama from Italy. The only person in the house at the time was the maid who was upstairs cleaning when she looked up and saw the masked men in the house. Apparently then had entered through an unlocked door and gained easy access to the house. Some construction workers in area (a.k.a. spotters) saw the crime but refused to talk to the press, worried about their safety. The men grabbed the safe and made their getaway. (Editor's Comment: Lock your doors, get a yapper, put in an alarm system, and do all the other smart personal safety and security stuff. If you've got more than $100,000 worth of valuables in your house, maybe locking the door would be a good idea? These guys were asking for it...)

I doubt that locking that door would have helped one bit. These guys knew there was a safe in there. Otherwise, we would have to assume they just got really really lucky with an unlocked door to a house with a safe full of jewelry.

They wanted that safe, and would have broken in to get it. A locked door won't keep determined crooks out.

An alarm is usually not turned on when someone is home (like the maid), and the crooks will have known if there were any yappers around. Then, all it takes is one steak for each yapper.

I don't think there's much that can be done when someone knows what you own, and they want it real bad. So the best defense is to not let anyone know what you got.

Maybe the maid was in on it? How else would they know there was a safe in that particular house, and where it was, and what was in it?
