Update on Mike McEvoy - Stranded in Santo Tomas

Healthcare I went to Santo Tomas today and saw Mike McEvoy. In case you want to visit he's in ward 14, bed 17. Just having that bit of information will make finding him a whole lot easier. Mike has been in the Santo Tomas hospital for one month and three days as of today. His wife and other family members were not there when I was there but I did talk to them on the phone. I also talked to the military reps from the US embassy. Mike is not a military veteran or retired from the US military so those angles are closed (and they were slim to start with.) It looks like the cost of a commercial medevac flight would be around $20,000 according to those who have experience with this kind of thing. Several people have come forward with suggestions and there are a few more things I'm going to look into, but at this point the options are few. Most importantly, this situation should be a stark reminder to anyone traveling to Panama (for whatever reason, and at any age) to make sure you have a major medical insurance policy to back you up. You can be 30 years-old and get hit by a bus while crossing Calle 50 with your backpack and end up in the bed next to Mike. And, if Mike was in the United States then his Medicare insurance would provide for his needs and he would be much better off than he is right now. In short, this sucks...
