City Grill - Great Pizza and Cold Beer

Food & Drink A long time ago I met a guy in Panama City who was fresh off the boat from China. As it works with the Chinese mafia in Panama City, the "new guys" are given a loan and help with the paperwork they need to get their businesses up and running. In return they have to pay back the loan with interest, of course. It just so happened that this guy was a great cook, and he made the best egg-rolls in town. I mean, you would think that there's not a lot you can do to improve on the basic concept of an egg roll, right? I don't know how he did it, but he made the best friggin' egg-rolls on the planet. I would routinely order large platters (50 or 100) for parties and stuff, and soon I had half of Panama hooked on his egg-rolls. I sang his praises far and wide, and pretty soon his restaurant was packed all the time. Now don't get me wrong, I know I sent a few customers his way, and I'm not trying to take credit for the guy's success. He did it on his own, with hard work and some fantastic eggrolls. (more).

Where You Going With This, Don? Eventually my friend was making some real money and was able to pay off his debt relatively quickly. He was actually "promoted" to manage other larger and more established Chinese restaurants in town. And I'm talking about egg-rolls because this guy started off in the same location as where the City Grill is now located. I stopped by this evening to meet Mike, who was back in the kitchen up to his elbows in pizza dough, doing the deal. The restaurant business is hard work and Mike's packing them in. He's got a great egg-roll, but in his case he calls them "pizza."

"Maybe Someday I'll Be Able to Advertise" Yeah, maybe. But then again, probably not, because I don't think I would take the money. I mean, I'm sure Bill Gates and Donald Trump work hard all day long, and I wouldn't mind having them as sponsors, but there are times when it makes a whole lot more sense to just help people when they need it most and have faith that things will work themselves out in the end. I know how hard it is to make a go of it, and I've received a whole lot of help and support from people who were once strangers and who I now consider good friends. We're all members of a community here in this little 'burg, and the more I learn about the people who come here from there, the more I'm convinced that I will simply choose to see the shiny side of things and ignore the rest. I no longer have the time or interest to participate in the gossip and rumor mill. I've got more productive things to do with my time. Like...

Tell You About the Great Pizza at the City Grill: There are a couple of spots that are starting to "gel" as gringo habitats. La Terraza, City Grill... And did I mention that they have cold beer on tap? Beer. Cold. It's hot in Panama. You should treat yourself every now and then. Think about it. Beer... (now, you have to say that with a Homer Simpson voice or it loses all effect.)

You get the point, right? So, to sum things up, there's no difference between the perfect eggroll and the perfect pizza, cold beer on tap is a good thing, and it's better to live in peace than survive in war. I've had enough of one and now I'm going for the other. Pizza, I mean.
