Panama: Posada Case Hearing Postponed

Panama News By Leonel Nodal for Prensa Latina - The Panama hearing to try former officials of the Moscoso government who released Luis Posada Carriles, was put off until August 14, a lawyer of the process revealed on Tuesday. The hearing was to be held today in the 12th Penal Court, but the defense of accused Concepcion Corro, then chief of the Prison System, requested more time to examine the file. The new date was already fixed as an alternative lawyer Javier Viques told Prensa Latina. Among the main defendants are former Government Minister Arnulfo Escalona and former Directors Carlos Bares (Police) and Javier Tapia (Migration). Posada Carriles, Pedro Crispin Remon, Guillermo Novo and Gaspar Jimenez were pardoned by Moscoso in 2004, a few hours before concluding her mandate. The 12th Penal Court must decide whether to try the former Moscoso officials or close the case, as the defense demands.
