Torrijos Denies Owning a BMW or Ties to Noriega
By Abdiel Zarate for La Estrella - Panama's President Martín Torrijos said yesterday that he does not know why someone is trying to entangle him now with Manuel Antonio Noriega in a relation that did not exist, and he challenged the Panamanian press to investigate the secret bonds that Panamanian businessmen and politicians had with the ex-strong man of Panama. Torrijos said it is part of the public history those people who did have a relationship with Noriega and that it would be interesting to know the private part of that history, the part that no one knows, "those who had a relationship with General Noriega that today don't appear in the photos, but who always had ties." "It would be good to do an investigation on this theme, on the relationships with politicians, on the businesses of the Panamanian Defense Forces; what the relation was between commerce and policy that was not known then, but hopefully now will also come out," added the President. This past Friday on the 27th of July a letter a dated 3 December 1987 arrived at the offices of the La Estrella newspaper with seal of the Panamanian Defense Forces and the signature of Noriega. In the letter Noriega gives instructions to a PDF Officer Rafael Cedeño to bring a BWM Model 316 through customs that was supposedly for Martin Torrijos. (more)
The letter also reminds Cedeño not to forget to send Torrijos "the monthly economic support which he has coming to him, per the agreement." With regards to this letter, Martin Torrijos denied that he has ever had a BMW and said he was "not in the country" at the time because he was studying in the United States (Texas A&M) and returned in 1992. Torrijos remembered that this same letter already came out during the elections of 1999 and 2004. "I do not know what their intentions are with the spreading of this document that speaks of a relationship that did not exist," he said.
Torrijos returned to Panama yesterday after taking one week on vacation with his wife and children, a fact which drew strong criticism from the political opposition. On the subject, Torrijos said it is only human to want to spend time on vacation with his wife and spent time with this children, who are growing and who want more of his time. "I am a human being with virtues and deficiencies. Every year I am going to take one week of vacation," he said.
Torrijos also expressed his concern over the deaths of construction workers and the poor safety and security on construction sites.

El presidente de la República, Martín Torrijos, dijo ayer que no sabe por qué tratan de enredarlo ahora con Manuel Antonio Noriega en una relación que no existió, y retó a la prensa panameña a investigar los vínculos secretos que tuvieron empresarios y políticos con el ex hombre fuerte de Panamá.
Torrijos indicó que es parte de la historia pública las personas que tuvieron relación con Noriega y que sería interesante saber la parte de la historia privada, la que no se conoce, “quiénes tuvieron relación con el general Noriega que hoy no salen en la foto; pero, sin embargo, siempre tenían vinculación”.
“Sería bueno hacer una investigación sobre ese tema, de las relaciones de políticos, de empresarios con las Fuerzas de Defensa; lo que hacía distinta la relación de comercio y política que no se conocía en ese momento, pero ojalá ahora también salgan”, agregó el presidente.
El pasado viernes 27 de julio llegó al diario La Estrella de Panamá una carta fechada el 3 de diciembre de 1987, con sello de la desaparecida Fuerzas de Defensa y con la firma de Noriega, en donde da instrucciones al oficial Rafael Cedeño, para que retire de Aduanas un BMW, modelo 316, que supuestamente había solicitado Torrijos.
En la misiva también se recuerda no olvidar enviarle a Torrijos “el apoyo económico mensual que se le viene dando, por el medio acordado”. Sobre esta carta el mandatario negó que haya tenido un BMW e indicó que “no estaba en el país” en esa fecha, porque estaba estudiando, y que regresó a Panamá en 1992.
Recordó que esta misma carta ya fue divulgada en la campaña para las elecciones de 1999 y en la de 2004. “No se qué intenciones tienen con la divulgación de un documento que habla de una relación que no existió”.
Torrijos regresó ayer al país, luego de tomar una semana de vacaciones con su esposa e hijos, hecho que motivó fuertes críticas de parte de la oposición panameña. Al respecto, indicó que es de ser humano pensar en vacaciones y que prefiere compartir con sus hijos que están creciendo y reclaman su presencia. “Soy un ser humano con virtudes y con deficiencias. Todos los años me voy a tomar una semana de vacaciones”.
El mandatario panameño también manifestó su preocupación por las constantes muertes en el sector construcción y la falta de seguridad en las obras.
