Municipality Fines Corcione S.A. $100,000
By José González Pinilla for La Prensa - In the middle of street closings and protests by the members of the SUNTRACS construction workers union, the office of the Municipal Engineer of Panama City fined the company Constructora Corcione, S.A. $100,000 for having violated safety and security regulations at the site of construction of the Torre 7400. The fine from the municipality will not be the only one. Upon determining that the lack of proper supports and shoring caused the death of the four construction workers last Thursday, the Ministry of Labor said they will impose a fine on the company for up to $500. "The red brick wall was not supported," said Carlos Salazar, the Chief of Inspection. In addition there were other irregularities: lack of handrails, extinguishers and safety equipment in bad condition. Corcione S.A. will not comment until they have received the report.

En medio de los cierres de calles realizados por obreros del Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs) ayer, Ingeniería Municipal multó con 100 mil dólares a la Constructora Corcione, S.A. por violar normas de seguridad en el proyecto Torre 7400.
La sanción del municipio no será la única. Al determinar que la falta de apuntalamiento de la tierra fue la causa de la muerte de los cuatro obreros de la Torre 7400, el jueves pasado, el Ministerio de Trabajo evalúa el monto de la multa que impondrá a la empresa, el cual no será mayor de 500 dólares. "La pared de tierra arcillosa no estaba asegurada", confirmó Carlos Salazar, jefe de inspección. Hubo otras irregularidades: falta de barandales, y extintores y guindolas en mal estado. Corcione S.A. no hará comentarios hasta recibir el informe.
