MINSA Calls on Parents to Vaccinate Children Against Whooping Cough

By Alexis Graell for El Siglo - Pertussis (whooping cough) has not been eradicated in Panama and presently the Ministry of Health is investigating suspected cases in the districts of Arraiján and San Miguelito, indicated Dr. Rosario Turner, who said it is a disease that can be prevented by vaccines, but that the application of those vaccines to children is the responsibility of parents. Turner said last year there were one hundred cases reported and a similar number this year. She said the Ministry of Health (MINSA) is obligated to prevent the spread of the disease and they have developed several strategies to control the outbreak and the reports of cases in the districts of Arraiján and San Miguelito. Vaccination Operations: The minister said she is making a plea to parents to take their children to be vaccinated against the disease, which can be controlled and prevented through vaccination. In order to fortify the vaccination effort this weekend MINSA will be sending people door-to-door to vaccinate people in their homes in some areas of Arraiján and San Miguelito, as one of the main activities to reinforce aspects of public health. She clarified that there is no public health alert, but what she is doing is asking the public to make a better effort in paying attention to issues of children's vaccinations, which requires a commitment from both the government and parents.

La tosferina no está erradicada del país y en la actualidad se investigan casos sospechosos en los distritos de Arraiján y San Miguelito, indicó la ministra de salud, Dra. Rosario Turner, quien sostuvo que se trata de una enfermedad que puede ser prevenida por medio de vacunas, cuya aplicación a los niños es responsabilidad de los padres.

La ministra de salud expresó que de acuerdo al comportamiento de la enfermedad, el año pasado se registraron cien casos y este año se mantiene estable la situación; sin embargo, el MINSA está en la obligación de impedir que proliferen los casos, por lo que se han iniciado varias estrategias para evitar la aparición, toda vez que se han reportado casos sospechosos en los distritos de Arraiján y San Miguelito.

Operativos de vacunación La ministra indicó que se le está haciendo un llamado a los padres de familia para que lleven a vacunar a sus hijos, ya que se trata de una enfermedad transmisible que puede ser evitada por medio de vacunas.

Para fortalecer las coberturas de vacunación, se estará realizando este fin de semana, operativos de vacunación casa por casa en algunos sectores de los distritos de Arraiján y San Miguelito, es una de las principales actividades que se llevarán a cabo para reforzar los aspectos en materia de salud.

Aclaró que no hay una alerta sanitaria, lo que se está haciendo es solicitando a la población que haga un mayor esfuerzo para que se tome conciencia de que hay que aplicar las vacunas a los niños, que debe ser un compromiso no solo del Gobierno sino de la sociedad y de la población en general.
