Is An Alliance Between "El Toro" and "JuanK" Forming? Nah...

PoliticsBy Carlos Estrada for La Critica - In politics, the saying goes, there are no surprises, but only those who are surprised. That saying was confirmed yesterday when people close to Ernesto Perez Balladares "did not discard" the possibility of supporting the Mayor of Panama City Juan Carlos Navarro as the First Undersecretary in his bid to win control of the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the PRD. Perez Balladares wants to be the President of the PRD. The possibility of that alliance was revealed by Priscila Valenzuela after a meeting of supporters of "El Toro" in a hotel yesterday. Juan Carlos Navarro also wants to be the Presidential candidate of the party in the 2009 elections. Perez Balladares introduced Juan Carlos Navarro as the PRD candidate for the Mayor of Panama City in 1999.

Editor's Comment: Not likely. Juan Carlos Navarro (aka "JuanK") has already formed an alliance with Martin Torrijos and Balbina Herrera going into the CEN elections and the PRD primary early next year. The plan is for Martin Torrijos to retain control of the PRD and remain on as the Secretary General, for Balbina Herrera to run (and win) as the Mayor of Panama City, and for Juan Carlos Navarro to win the PRD primary and run for President in 2009 as the PRD candidate. The three of them are all going to support the others in their individual goals, and all of that means keeping "El Toro" on the sidelines. That's JuanK's plan. El Toro has a different view of the future, and it does not include Juan Carlos Navarro changing his title from Mr. Mayor to Mr. President in 2009. So this report can most likely be filed in the "wishful thinking" basket, under "it ain't going to happen." I can't wait to hear how Juan Carlos Navarro chooses to tell "El Toro" to pound sand tomorrow.

¿Alianza Toro-JuanK?
