Nine crew members on Panama registered motor tug rescued

Panama - MANGALORE: Coast guard has rescued nine crew members aboard a Panama registered motor tug, which was in distress following a major technical snag, in Lakshadweep waters. Acting on an information provided by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, on Saturday, the coast guard, Karnataka, sent its ship "Annie Besant" and brought the tug to the new Mangalore Port, coast guard deputy commandant (operations) Nithin M Rathore said in a release here on Sunday. The timely assistance by the coast guard, ensured the safety of the nine crew members and averted possible environmental damage in Indian waters, he said. The tug, proceeding to Singapore from Sharjah, developed the snag off Lakshadweep while sailing at its full speed. The tug, adrift since October 7, ran out of ration stocks, also posed hindrance to navigation of other vessels in the busy sea route, Rathore said. On request from the master and owner of the vessel, the tug was brought here and berthed at New Mangalore Port (NMPT), he said.
