Medical Costs in Panama

HealthcareBy Lee Zeltzer for the Boquete Guide.com - By editor | October 14, 2007 - IMPORTANT: This is informational ONLY. We have excellent health insurance and are publishing this information ONLY to provide information on hospital costs in Panama. I received the Hospital Bill from Punta Pacifica today, all seventeen pages of it. The bill included eight days in critical care, six days in a private room, all medications, all labs, dialysis five times everything except the professional fees for the doctors. Before the 15% Jubalado discuento the bill was $22,152.00, total. The shock was palpable; I expected it to be much larger. (more)

Here are some itemized costs for anyone familiar with US health care to compare. These are all gross costs, before discount. I have no basis of comparison.

  • Critical Care Room $700 a day

  • Private Room $150 a day

  • MRI of the head $290

  • Dialysis $455

  • Fees for blood products. In David we were told blood products were unavailable for purchase. In Panama City there was never an issue of availability on plasma or platelets.

  • Plasma $100 a unit

  • Platelets $450 a unit

  • A fee of $252 to examine the blood donors

I understand the source blood is not sold only the processing but if they can provide this in Panama City in a private hospital why not in David?

If you have any experience with costs in the US please comment so we have a basis of comparison.

This is not a great comparison because neither episode involved spending even one night in the hospital. But it does illustrate that your bill seems quite reasonable.

My wife broke her ankle and we took her to an emergency room in Oregon. The total bill for a few hours treatment, including cast, was just over $3000.

I had a kidney stone and went to the same emergency room. They did a scan and sent me home a few hours later. Total cost once again just over $3000.

Last year I had to have my right hip replaced. Being (slightly) too young for Medicare in the U.S., and my insurance company declining any payment due to this being a pre-existing condition, I inquired how much this would cost in the U.S. I was told by a Houston orthopedic surgeon that it would be between $50K and $60K.

I chose to have it done in Punta Pacifica Hospital. It was a good choice. Great surgeons and a wonderful hospital and staff. I was there for five days. The all inclusive price (including hospital, doctors' fees, and prosthesis) was $13K.
