New US Cultural Center Inaugurated - Right Under PMG's Nose

Politics By Ereida Prieto-Barreiro for the Panama America - You can see the window of the office of Pedro Miguel González, the President of the Panamanian National Assembly from the balcony of the newly inaugurated "We Are United" library, funded by the US Embassy in Panama, located directly across the street. González is considered by the United States to be a fugitive from justice, and he will now have a view of this new center, located in the Eusebio A. Morales library, from which one can even see González's parking space and the fleet of vehicles used by his bodyguard detail. US Ambassador to Panama William Eaton said yesterday "the center in addition to being a library, will serve as a connection between the USA and Panama and as a place for cultural and educational interchange." He said the center "personifies the meaning of the logo of our embassy and is the reflection of what is possible when we all work together." González is accused by the United States of having assassinated US Army Sergeant Zak Hernandez in 1992. The election of Pedro Miguel González to the position of President of the Panamanian National Assembly last year has caused the US Congress to refuse to ratify the bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Panama and the United States, even though González was acquitted by a Panamanian court in 1997. González says the United States has mounted a "persecution" against him. (Discuss Pedro Miguel Gonzalez in our Forums)
