Mariano Rivera Now At 19 Saves in 2008 MLB Season

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Star New York Yankee relief pitcher Panamanian Mariano "Sandman" Rivera picked up his 19th save of the 2008 Major League Baseball season last night in the Yankees 8-5 win over the San Diego Padres. In what has become a trademark and typical Mariano Rivera appearance, he gave up one hit, pitched one inning, faced three batters, got one strikeout, and shut down the Padres in the 9th to secure his 462nd career save. Mariano Rivera now needs just sixteen more saves to tie Lee Smith at #2 on the all-time list. Trevor Hoffman, who holds the #1 all time spot with 539 career saves, continues to pitch with the San Diego Padres. He has 15 saves this season, six in his last ten appearances. Today, Mariano Rivera is 77 saves behind Trevor Hoffman for the #1 all time career save record.
