By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - And this is why I was tracking Mariano Rivera so closely this season. Yesterday the New York Yankee star closer Panamanian Mariano Rivera picked up his 35th save of the 2008 Major League Baseball season, which also was his 478th career save. At 478 Mariano Rivera is now tied with Lee Smith at #2 on the all time career saves list, and this next save will give him sole possession of the #2 spot. From here, Mariano sets his sights on San Diego Padre's closer Trevor Hoffman who is still active and in the #1 spot with 552 career saves (currently). If Hoffman retires today, Mariano would need 74 saves and at least two more seasons (maybe three) to catch and pass Hoffman. It should be noted that Hoffman has been pitching since 1993 and Rivera since 1995, but in his first two years Rivera was not used primarily as a closer. Mariano Rivera is still the game's most dominate closing pitcher. This season he threw a 1.54 ERA with 73 strikeouts and only 6 walks.
