FAQ: I'm A Doctor - Can I Practice Medicine In Panama?

Why Panama & Frequently Asked Questions

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I get this kind of question frequently: "Don, Do you know of any hospitals or physician practices in Panama that need a pathologist (generalist)? Regards, Mike M.D." Sorry, Mike, but foreigners can not practice medicine in Panama. Period. This is one of the professions closed to outsiders, and the doors are pretty tightly shut. There are a few flying along the edges (like Chiropractors) but no one openly practicing or advertising. In short, if you're not a Panamanian then you won't be practicing medicine in Panama.

Hey Don: Don't quote me on this but I was told that foreign doctors can work in Panama as long as they acquire Panamanian citenzenship. Once they have that, they need to take all their diplomas to be stamped, authenticated, and translated into spanish and taken to the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health buildings and follow the multiple procedures....Then comes 2 YEARS of internship--one year in the city and one year in the interior ....THESE two YEARS are mandatory for everyo.ne in Panama. You don't get to pick where the heck you get send to. ...that by itself would be a deterrant( I hope that is the right spelling) and the pay I believe to be under 1G a month (a bigger shocker for all American Doctors ie Specialists!!).
I am pretty sure the above is correct however I have been known to be wrong seldom though. Hope this helps. later now
