Panama Election Alliances Boom

PoliticsPanama, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) Panama's in power Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) starts a new period of alliances with Popular and Liberal organizations for the May 3 Presidential Race. Their Conventions chose Balbina Herrera and Juan Carlos Navarro candidate president and vice president with broad Liberal support although some ranks wanted opposition Ricardo Martinelli (of Cambio Democratico). The PRD also promotes the official program in case they win. Current talks between the Panameńista and Vanguardia Moral de la Patria parties are expected to forge an alliance to run with Juan Carlos Varela (Panamenista) and Guillermo Endara for president and vice president. Both rank third and fourth in recent polls led by Martinelli (40 per cent of votes) while support to Herrera fell compared to 2008 yet the cabinet party hopes to erase the difference along pre-ballot months.
