What? A Live Auction of pre-Columbian Artifacts from Panama? Interesting...

Panama News

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Hey, check out what showed up in my inbox yesterday: "Panama, c. 500-1500AD. A heavy and nice red ware vase with round body and wide flared tubular neck and swirl design in gray with crème colored background on neck. Nice example of its type, produced near and influenced by Costa Rica, in excellent condition. H: 6.25". Choice. Old San Francisco Collection." Somebody is auctioning off a whole bunch of pre-Columbian pottery, all of it supposedly from Panama, in an auction on 15 February 2009. Didn't I just read something from the FBI saying that it's illegal for anyone to own or sell artifacts illegally taken from Panama? Let me check into this further, but my sense is that someone decided to dump their collection after the FBI busted a guy recently and returned his collection to Panama. Maybe someone wants to cash in before it's confiscated? Just supposition on my part at this point. I wonder what the Panamanian Institute of Arts and Culture (INAC) will have to say about this when I call them on Monday morning...
