Nigeria: 12 Held Over Tainted Syrup

Panama NewsTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS - The authorities have arrested 12 people in connection with tainted teething formula that killed 84 children after they took a syrup laced with diethylene glycol, a chemical normally found in antifreeze, health officials said Wednesday. Five of those arrested were operators of Barewa Pharmaceuticals Ltd., the manufacturer, while the other seven worked for the supplier of the chemical, officials said. Dr. Paul B. Orhii of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control said an investigation showed Barewa had bought the material in a jerrycan instead of an original container; the chemical turned out to be diethylene glycol mislabeled as propylene glycol. Health officials said earlier that the company had always bought the ingredient through approved channels, but that it had turned to a new source. Diethylene glycol has been implicated in other poisonings, including in Panama, where at least 174 people died after mislabeled syrup was added to cold medicine in 2006.
