Milk Workers Strike Against Estrella Azul Enters Third Day

Protests & Demonstrations By Gilberto Pérez for El Siglo - The third day of the strike generates milk shortages. The workers of the company Estrella Azul are not allowing their arms to be twisted and today continue their third day of an indefinite strike. At the same time, milk is scarce on the shelves of the supermarkets, while the representatives of the company and the union can not agree on a wage increase. Yesterday at 9:00 am about 300 plant workers tried to close Transístmica a few meters from the company to draw attention to their strike, but they were driven back by riot police who gassed them with pepper spray. The confrontation lasted about two hours and caused a massive traffic jam. At about 11:00 am the police officers convinced the striking workers to stay on the sidewalks, and later they left the streets altogether and congregated at the doors of the company. Push and Pull for a Wage Increase - The back and forth in order to obtain a wage increase for the 1,400 workers of the company has caused both the union representatives as well as the company to propose new numbers. “We have adjusted our proposal, from originally asking for .39 cents per hour, we have lowered that to .25 cents, and then again to .18 cents," said Miguel Edward, union leader. The company has done the same thing, increasing from their original offer of .03 cents per hour to .07 cents per hour, a number than has not yet convinced the union. At the closing of this edition, both sides continue talking and for today a marked shortage of milk is anticipated.
