Retaining Wall Collapse Causes Chaos on Ave. Balboa

Construction & Interiors La Prensa - Chaos on Balboa Avenue caused by sidewalk collapse. The failure of a retaining wall at the construction site of the hotel, residential, and office building Star Bay Tower, being constructed at the intersection of Ave. Balboa and Calle Aquilino De la Guardia, caused chaos yesterday in Marbella, Paitilla, and Bella Vista, including a tremendous traffic jam and the interruption of drinking water and electrical services to some sectors. The collapse, the cause of which has not yet been determined, will be the focus of an investigation. The Ministry of Public Works said the area of the collapse, which also included part of the pedestrian walkway in front of the building, will remain off limits until they can determine if the adjacent roadway is safe for traffic circulation. They explained that the ground in this area is sandy and because water has been falling directly on the ground due to the construction, without being filtered, acquires an (accumulated) weight that can put pressure on the retaining wall. Nevertheless, the wall - that was constructed years ago as part of the Ice Tower project - should have been built to be able to support this pressure.
