Mariano Rivera Picks Up Save #15 (497 Of Career)

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Mariano Rivera, the star relief pitcher for the New York Yankees, picked up his fifteenth sixteenth save of the season yesterday in their 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Rivera now has 497 career saves, just three short of the milestone 500 mark. Only one other player in history has thrown 500 saves, Trevor Hoffman who is still active and pitching this year with the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoffman has 16 saves so far this year and 570 total for his career, so Rivera continues to keep pace. Rivera will need at least two seasons to catch and pass Hoffman, but apparently that will only happen once Hoffman retires. Hoffman will turn 42 this year and Rivera 40, so as long as Rivera can stay frosty then sooner or later that geezer Hoffman will have to call it quits. Right now, anyway, both pitchers seem to be just as deadly as ever.
