Mariano Rivera Now Has 499 Career Saves

Sports Section By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Mariano Rivera, the star closer for the New York Yankees, now has a total of 499 career saves to his credit, and hopefully he will soon join Trevor Hoffman as the only other relief pitcher in the history of baseball with 500 career saves, virtually guaranteeing him a spot in the hall of fame. Rivera retired the only batter he faced in the Yankee's 11-7 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night, pitch-hitter Diory Hernandez. Rivera has converted 17 of 18 save opportunities thus far this season. The Yankees beat the Mets 9-1 last night in the opener of a three-game "subway series" - and their next game is tonight. If you get the chance to watch this game, tune if towards the end if it's close. If Mariano get's #500 tonight you'll be able to witness live a rare feat indeed - something only one other man has ever done before - rarer for example than walking on the moon... Quite an accomplishment for a young Panamanian boy from Puerto Caimito.
