Noriega Receives Another Legal Setback

Law & Lawyers

By William Sala for La Prensa - Former military dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega was given a new legal setback. The full session of the Panamanian Supreme Court of Justice rejected a claim of unconstitutionality submitted by Noriega's lawyers, which sought to recover property that was expropriated through a judicial decision from 28 October 1991. The law firm representing Lorena del Carmen Noriega, the daughter of the former dictator, argued that the phrase "property of the State" was unconstitutional, but the Court rejected the appeal. Noriega remains in prison in Miami in hopes the United States Supreme Court will rule in his favor on appeal against a decision from a lower court that would send him to France. The European country wants Noriega sent there to serve a sentence on a money laundering conviction.
