By DEIVIS ELIECER CERRUD for La Estrella - The crisis internal the Panama's Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) political party is taking its toll. Thousands of their members are resigning from the party. Internal struggles for control of the party have caused problems. Statistics maintained by the Electoral Tribunal show that 8,616 members quit the party from June to July, and there were another 15,358 resignations in May. Such is the magnitude of the drop in the PRD, by comparison only 302 people resigned from the Panameñista party during the same period. Juan Carlos Navarro, the former Mayor of Panama City and member of the party's National Executive Committee, didn't give much importance to the number of people who are leaving the PRD. While not hiding the defeat handed to the party in the last election, he said they intend to renew the party to be a true opposition to the administration of Ricardo Martinelli. (See Comments)

Editor's Comment: Towards the end of the administration of Martin Torrijos, at the peak of his personal popularity and right at about the time when Balbina Herrera was trying to decide whether or not she was going to make a run for the Presidency, the PRD held several nationwide membership recruiting drives to inflate their ranks. There are more than 3.3 million people in Panama, and most of them are not card-carrying members of any political party. And, as indicated by this story, even those who are inscribed in a party tend to sway and flow with the political currents and back either the individual or party they think will bring them the most "stuff." In fact, I'm not surprised at all by this article. But no matter what happens, the PRD has proven time and time again they can be counted on to muster about 35% of the vote under even the worst conditions. Consider the following:
