Mariano Rivera Now Has 33 Saves - Still Most in MLB

Sports Section[image1_right] By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - The star closing pitcher for the New York Yankees, Mariano Rivera, now has 33 saves this season. He picked up #33 on Tuesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Rivera came into the game in the top of the 9th inning with the Yankees leading 7-4 and managed the save, but not without first giving up a meaningless deep homer to straight center field by Blue Jays third baseman Edwin Encarnación. In typical Mariano Rivera fashion, he also gave up a hit, struck out two batters, and then got a rolling grounder to finish off the side. With 33 saves Mariano Rivera still has the most in all of baseball, and the Yankees lead the league as a team with 37. Of note, Trevor Hoffman has not picked up a save in nine days and he's still stuck at 25, primarily because the Milwaukee Brewers he's now playing for suck. While the Yankees are on fire, having won nine of their last ten games (including a four game sweep of their hated rivals the Boston Red Sox), the Brewers have one foot in the grave in the National League Central, and are 7.5 games out of first place. And while the Yankees have won 71 games thus far, the Brewers have only won 55, meaning Martino Rivera has had many more save opportunities than Trevor Hoffman. And that's your Mariano Rivera update for today. Don't worry, football starts soon, and when that happens I'll forget all about baseball... Hey, are there any Panamanians playing for the New York Giants?
