Israeli residing in Panama killed in robbery

By Olga Gouresky - Israel News - Meir Cohen, a 45-year-old Israeli immigrant to Panama, was killed in the armed robbery of his shop Thursday night. The Foreign Ministry was briefed with the details of the incident, as were the victim's relatives residing in Ashdod. According to information obtained by the Foreign Ministry, Cohen lived in the United States for several years before moving to Panama City, where he opened a grocery shop. On Thursday, two armed men arrived at the store with the aim of robbing it. Cohen responded by pulling out his weapon, and a gun battle broke out. Cohen was killed during the shooting, along with one of the bandits. The Foreign Ministry told Ynet the victim's family is in contact with the local consulate. Thursday's incident was the second murder of an Israeli in Central American during an armed robbery in recent months. Exactly two months ago, 26-year-old Itai Shechter Elias was killed in Costa Rica while on vacation with his brother, who witnessed his murder. His stepfather at the time told Ynet, "Our other son called us and told us there was a robbery, that they were threatened at gunpoint, they handed over all the money they had and then they were shot at. The suspects fled the scene." Received Yesterday Evening Via Email: "i am saddened to announced to you the passing of my dear friend Michael Cohen, Michael came to Panama from Israel via Miami and had a small mini market in panama city. This afternoon, around 3:30PM three armed delinquents tried to rob his store and in the ensuing struggle Michael was murdered. He shot and killed one of the robbers, a second one is detained and the third is being sought. Michael was a good and honest man whom I will always remember with special care.
