Woman sentenced five years for smuggling heroin on Atlanta flight

Drug TraffickingBy MEGAN MATTEUCCI for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - A federal judge sentenced a woman to five years in prison for smuggling heroin on to a flight that landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Zanada Moses, 25, was convicted of importing heroin into the United States and possession of heroin with the intent to distribute. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Richard W. Story sentenced Moses to serve five years and three months in prison, along with four years of supervised release. The judge also ordered her to attend a drug treatment program, Acting United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said. U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrested Moses on Jan. 15 when she arrived at the Atlanta airport from Panama City, Panama. Agents searched Moses, of Baltimore, and found more than two pounds of heroin “in and on” her body, prosecutors said. Moses told agents she was going to be paid $20,000 for smuggling the drugs, according to prosecutors. She pleaded guilty in April. “This defendant risked both her life and her liberty when she attempted to smuggle heroin into the United States in her body,” Yates said in a statement. "Fortunately, the heroin she was carrying was safely recovered and her life was preserved, but she has lost her freedom as a result of her actions, and will now spend over five years in a federal prison.” (See Comments)

Editor's Comment: When this article says "more than two pounds," so I think she was almost certainly carrying one kilo of pure heroin. And since the article says the drugs were "in and on" her body, then she probably swallowed capsules to try to introduce the drugs. She's damn lucky they didn't break open - if they had then she would have died from an overdose. So, what's a kilo of nearly pure heroin worth in Atlanta? This woman was supposedly going to get paid $20,000 for smuggling the drugs. If this was pure heroin then it's value in the US is considerably higher than what's normally sold on the street to end users because it can be cut and diluted several times. And the best I can find right now indicates one kilo of pure uncut heroin in the US is worth about $162,000 dollars. And now this woman will spend more than five years in prison and another four years on probation. And once again, she's damn lucky they didn't catch her here - prison in Panama makes prison in the US look like a trip to Disney World.
