First New Naval Air Station Installed on Isla Chapera

Drug Trafficking By Elizabeth Garrido A. for La Prensa - The first of four new naval air stations being built by the Panamanian government was inaugurated today, 1 December 2009, on Isla Chapera in the La Perlas archipelago has part of a joint agreement signed recently by the various organizations of state security. The Government and Justice Minister, Jose Raul Mulino, explained these bases are meant to combat drug trafficking and that they will be staffed "purely" by Panamanians, without the presence of personnel from the United States or foreign aid. Isla Chapera is located in the Panamanian Pacific, is owned by Jose Nelson Urrego, who was supposedly the chief of telecommunications for the now defunct Norte del Valle drug trafficking cartel. Urrego was arrested in September 2007 and remains in the La Joya prison. Since then, Isla Chapera passed to the hands of the Center for Seized Property and Funds of the Public Ministry. The new naval air bases will be staffed by officers from the National Police, the National Naval Air Service and the National Border Service, according to the Ministry of Government and Justice who visited the island this morning with local media to inaugurate the new facility.
