Martinelli Promises to Catch and Punish Murderers

Crime & PunishmentPanama's President Ricardo Martinelli said today the recent murders in the country can not continue. He told local media his government is going to stop these killers, be they adults or minors. Martinelli said the murderers will "go to jail" and the full weight of the law will be applied to them. "We've had enough of this, that they are killing people and it goes unpunished," he added. (Source: La Prensa)

Editor's Comment: The government is going to take several actions to allow for longer jail sentences. For example, they would allow multiple sentences to be applied to run consecutively instead of concurrently, and therefore people convicted of multiple crimes in different cases could be sent to prison for as long as 50 years. Last night Martinelli also floated some trial balloons, saying that issues such as life imprisonment or the possibility of a death sentence could be issues put forward for a popular vote by means of a plebiscite. The public is calling for a crackdown, and at this point they appear more than willing to give up some personal freedoms in exchange for greater internal security.

Until they find the source of all these weapons used in these criminal act which seem to have suddenly appeared within the last year and go after the group responsible for the weapons distribution nothing will change!! Longer and longer prison sentences and building more and more jails do not work! Just look at the good old USA! These criminal acts are being orchestrated by the Drug cartels and the major gangs from mainly Mexico. Gangs like MS13 are now tagging all the neighborhoods here in Panama City and the rest of Panama, killing and fighting for territory ! When will the Panamanian government wake up to this?
Panama is just like Mexico fifteen years ago! All this is already documented the Cartels and the Gangs are using the same model they used in the rest of Central America to take over! Panama is truly an unsafe place to live! Until the Police due their basic due diligence, get off their butts and start patrolling like they use to nothing will change! The Police spent more time driving around and doing nothing! In my Neighborhood of Panama City, every store and Fonda within the last three weeks has been robbed! The owners and customers where tied up and robbed also! There has been over fifty burglaries and over thirty personal assaults and robberies in the last four months!
Two personal assaults on women last week alone right down the street! The so called police used to walk the streets here and in other neighborhoods last year! Now you are lucky to see them drive by three or four to a car once a week now! The Local large La Guardia(police station is only a two miles away!

I fully agree. Longer sentences are meaningless to these killers and robbers.

More jails and more cops only adds to societies' tax burden.

To stop out of control crime requires ruthless and decisive punishment. When gangbangers see their buds with their necks stretched because they knocked-over a local convenience store perhaps they would reconsider?

Immediately terminate anyone found guilty of cold, calculated murder. All others guilty of lesser crimes (corruption, kidnapping, extortion, robbery, rape, drug trafficking/money laundering) should be beaten within an inch of their life and then let go with a promise the beating will be twice as bad should they get into trouble again.

End Result:

No additional cops and no additional prisons.
A reduction in the broken judicial system.
Lower insurance rates.
Lower taxes.
Law abiding citizens will be safer.

Sometimes a good painful spanking works better than painless death or time behind bars to plan-out the next crime once released - and they all get released early anyway.

Hit them where it hurts. I've always learned from my spankings.
