All Dressed Up And No Damned Census Takers...

Expat TalesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - After all of the hype leading up to the National Census yesterday, a few people were disappointed. I received the following email this afternoon: "Hi Don, Have enjoyed your information quite often and would like to add our experience with yesterdays "Censos". We and two of our neighbors sat at home (Costa Esmeralda area) the whole day waiting for the Censors. My husband and I would have liked to walk the beach sometime and our neighbors had other things they wanted to do. BUT NOBODY CAME TO OUR DOORS!! This morning as I opened our gate I found a pink sticker with the big words EMPADRONADA! Our neighbors also had such stickers on their gates. It seems some guy didnt see the cars parked in the carport of our house or by our neighbors houses either. We feel we have been neglected and want to be "Censored". Do you have a connection to the supervisor who took your information so we know who to ask and can manage to be "Censored"? Keep up the good work, glad somebody is doing something! Sincerely, Alexander & Bonita." Don't worry about it. They just tagged your house and moved on, apparently thinking no body was home. Welcome to the world of "margin of error."

Same thing happened to us. In the city. After our bell was rung at 7:00 am by the guardshack at the condo to let us know the census takers were here. After we personally sought them out in late in the afternoon and were assured they would come to our apartment. Stuck on our door this morning - a sticker which means we weren't home!!! We were here ALL freakin' day!!! Someone didn't want to bother to talk to us, I guess.

hahaha I wouldn't think of it as a mistake. They got paid 50 bucks by working in the census, with a little (if none) supervision. Im guessing, but to me it is more like the censor skipped your houses on purpose, fake the job was done and got his check. Theres a panamanian phrase you should learn, understand and remember and it is "jueva vivo". Either that or he got tired of ringing the bell. Im guessing again, if u call the comptroller office they might find out what went wrong, or they would say they are calling you back.

The read sticker means that your house has been completed, counted. If you were not home you would not have a sticker on your house. So, the counters think they are getting paid for doing nothing, perhaps they will dummy the paperwork, in an airconditioned environment. Somebody may get wise when things do not add up, as I always say...welcome to Panama

They didn't want to speak to non Spanish speaking persons. They were going to bypass us until I walked out on the street, corraled one and literally pushed him into the house. No one at Bocas Marina on Isla Colon was counted, the census lady showed up at Red Frog Marina with only two forms. After the draconian measures taken to ensure compliance it is amusing to hear that it wasn't the countees who didn't comply, rather the countors.

We are in a rural area near david chiriqui. The census taker came at 10 AM with a neighbor who wanted to be sure I would understand. The census person was was very professional and helpful. She teaches in a local school and knows most of the families on our road. She told me she would be able to get her 10 families enumerated very quickly & would devote the rest of day helping census worker who were having problems.
