Contributed by: Don WinnerA circuit prosecutor was removed from office yesterday afternoon after he left the scene of an accident which he apparently caused, which left one person injured. The incident occurred yesterday morning, Thursday, at the intersection of Calle 67 and Vía España in the neighborhood of Carrasquilla, area of San Francisco, when 38 year old Mauricio Olmedo Cevallos Sanjur, who identified himself as Fourteenth Circuit Prosecutor of Panama, collided with a delivery truck in front of the Bimbo baking company. Sanjur Cevallos, allegedly lost control of the car he was driving, a brown BMW SUV with license plate number 982929, colliding with the truck that was parked near the entrance of the company. As a result of the impact, the truck driver was injured with blows to the body, and he was trapped between the entrance gate and the vehicle because at the moment the accident occurred he had gotten out of his vehicle and was opening the gate.
When the traffic police units arrived on the scene, the prosecutor gave them his driver's license and then left the scene of the accident, aboard another car, apparently to avoid taking a Breathalyzer test, because the police officers noticed the behavior of the prosecutor indicated he was under the influence of alcohol. Witnesses at the scene of the accident pointed out the broken neck of a bottle of alcohol that was found just below the prosecutor's car door, indicating the bottle fell to the ground at the time when he got out of his car. What's more, he also pulled out a handgun,
The truck driver was taken to a medical center for care, where he remains hospitalized. The general secretary of the Public Ministry, Nedelka Diaz, issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying that prosecutor Cevallos had been removed from his position for having left the scene of an accident, and as a member of the Public Ministry he should lead by example, adding that the law will be more rigid in the case of this case because it deals with a public official. His seat will be filled on an interim basis by Oderai Diaz, who has more than 20 years of experience. It was also reported that the family members of the accident victim have been approached in order to offer them any necessary assistance. Yesterday afternoon Mauricio Cevallos was taken to the office of the Assistant Attorney General to make his statement about the facts of this case. (El Siglo)
Editor's Comment: This guy should be made and example of. Drunk, waving a gun around, leaving the scene of the accident to avoid taking the Breathalyzer test - my only question is, why in the name of hell did the cops on the scene let him get away like that? Why didn't they pull out all of the stops and arrest his ass on the spot? I know the answer - fear. They were afraid they would "get in trouble" for busting a sitting prosecutor. In fact, they should have known already that they had the legal authority to put his ass face down in the dirt and slap the cuffs on him - just like they would have done if the shoe was on the other foot, and it was a drunken truck driver that slammed into the car of the prosecutor. This attitude of "rights and privilege" has to be erased. They say that all are equal under the law, but in practice that's complete and utter bullshit. In Panama, some pigs are more equal than others, and this case proves it.
