Confirmed - 567th Red Horse Squadron Building Military Base "For The Panamanians"

Panama News By DON WINNER for - Col. Tim Lamb, the Commander of the 567th Red Horse Squadron stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, confirmed that this unit is currently deployed to Panama to build a base in Metetí, in the Darién province near the border with Colombia. I called to ask about the press release issued by Maj. Shannon Mann of the 916th Public Affairs Office that said the Red Horse personnel were going to "build a soccer field for permanent party that will occupy the base." Specifically, the statement made it sound like there would be active duty US Air Force personnel assigned to Panama who would be occupying the base. In response, Colonel Lamb clarified "she should have said the base will be occupied by Panamanian personnel." OK, that's cleared up. However, the 567th Red Horse Squadron is, in fact, building the new Aero Naval Base for the government of Panama, and they are not part of New Horizons, Fuertes Caminos, or deployed to Panama in order to build schools, clinics, or roads. They are building the base. Period.

So, What's Wrong With That? Not a damn thing. The administration of Ricardo Martinelli will have to deal with the fact that this whole thing is now out in the open, and that they have been caught in a lie. They have been saying from day one that the new Aero Naval Counter Drug bases would be built by Panamanians and occupied by Panamanians. Personally, I think it's a great thing that the Red Horse guys are here and doing their work. I think it's unfortunate that the PRD is trying to toss down some banana peels for the administration to slip and fall. However - this entire evolution highlights the relative inability of the Martinelli administration to deal with information management. The US Air Force is building a runway - so friggin' what? The problem lies in the political reality on the ground in Panama that there are still some people, and mind you it's only about 10% to 15% of the population, who harbor really hard-core anti-US military sentiments. It's not that they don't like your standard Gringo retiree - they don't like the US military, which is different. In any case, Martinelli could invite the press to tour the new facility tomorrow and interview the Red Horse guys on the ground, explain what they are doing and why, and the vast majority of Panamanians would love it, approve, and think it's a good thing. The PRD can "make something" out of all this only because the administration is trying to hide it, which is unfortunate.

Quite right too ........ if you can get a foreign military to build your base as a training exercise, go for it ....... what's the alternative? Panamanian contractors who bribed someone to get the contract, start 2 months after the contract start date, finish 2 years after the contract completion date and exceed the bid amount by 200% .............. not that I'm a cynic or anything!
