18 Wheeler Slams Sedan - Sends It Flying Off Bridge

Traffic Accidents An 18 wheeler slammed into the back of a small sedan, and sent it literally flying through the air. The accident occurred on the bridge overpass of the Southern Corridor in the area of Costa del Este. A couple, both approximately 50 years old, were in the sedan when it was hit and both were injured. The driver received the greatest impact from the crash and he had several broken bones. When the truck slammed into the back of the sedan, the car broke through the safety railing and fell more than five meters to the pavement below. Witnesses say the accident was caused by an 18 wheeler that fled from the scene after having caused the accident. Police, fire, and ambulance personnel arrived at the scene to assist and treat the injured. Both were taken in ambulances from the 911 system to area hospitals. (Telemetro)

Interesting isn't it that yet another serious accident, which fortunately did not result in fatalities, should be the consequence of poor driving practice by a "professional" driver. If we take accidents thus caused in Panama out of the equation we find that fatal motor accidents in Panama are actually quite few. Why do we not hold professional drivers, that is taxi, bus and heavy truck operators, to a higher standard here? It is my view their vehicles should also undergo more frequent and more rigorous examination for roadworthiness.
Why not indeed?
