Editor's Comment: Yet another hooker bust in Panama. First of all, this article makes it sound like it was some kind of a huge surprise or mystery. Everyone in the entire world knows about the famous Habano's, located right across the street from the Marriott hotel. It's been there for years. The bar is frequented mostly by foreign businessmen who are traveling to Panama, and the men go there because the women are there. The women go there because the men are there. Immigration raids this place regularly. And for the record, what they do is sweep up the women who are there - mostly Colombian prostitutes - and they take them away to the holding cells in Immigration even though they have their paperwork in order. I mean to say that almost all of the women who were arrested last night are probably in the country legally - either on tourist visas or with some kind of a special permit. They go to this bar where they sit, drink, flirt with the men, and try to get them to go on a "date" (wink, nod.) Now, Immigration officials will squeeze these girls for bribes - usually forcing them to pay about $1,500 each before they are released. If they refuse to pay then they are threatened with forced deportation - and if you are deported from Panama then you can't come back for five years. The girls pay the bribes because it's better to turn over some of their earnings to corrupt immigration officials than to get booted out of the country. And all of this has been going on for years - under the former administration of Martin Torrijos and it has continued under the current administration of Ricardo Martinelli. "Golly, gee - there's hookers in Habanos! Imagine our shock and surprise..." Give me a friggin' break - how do they do this with a straight face? Immigration pull this extortion routine about once every four months or so. Oh, and the "report from a concerned citizen" is usually some dude's wife, who's pissed off because hubby is out banging the local (foreign) talent.
