New Law On Private Firearm Ownership Passes First Debate

Safety & Security Last night the Commission on Government, Justice, and Constitutional Affairs of the National Assembly unanimously approved the first reading of Bill 209, on firearms, ammunition and related materials. Traders and businessmen who are involved in one way or the other with the firearms business categorically supported the approval in the first debate of this bill that establishes a legal regime to regulate the ownership, possession, import activities, export marketing, warehousing, brokerage, transport and trafficking in firearms, ammunition and related materials by private individuals. Editor's Comment: Really? The gun dealers "categorically support" this bill? Well, I don't know what it contains (does anyone have a draft?) but that's a good sign, if it's true. If there was anything particularly onerous in this bill then the first guys to oppose it would be the dealers and salesmen. I fully support ownership of firearms by private individuals for home and personal defense, while I simultaneously support harsh sentencing for any criminal who uses a firearm in the execution of a crime. I hope they don't do anything to restrict ownership by legal foreign residents.
