Authorities Seize Container Full Of Illegally Cut Tropical Hardwood

Environmental IssuesLocal authorities yesterday detained two containers carrying Cocobolo wood, valued at $300,000. The wood, which did not have permits, was a load of 14,000 board feet that was bound for China. Juan Guerrero, head of Integrated Water Resources Management of the National Environment Authority, said this is the first case they have discovered this year of the illegal transportation of Cocobolo wood for export. The Cocobolo or Dalbergia is on the brink of extinction. In Panama, said Guerrero, this wood has a value of approximately $5 per board foot. It is estimated that in China the wood is much more valuable. (El Siglo)

Good Evening Mr. Winner
I was a professional arborist for 16 years in the states. Here I seen the need for the care of trees here in the city. I came up with a plan and the equipment needed. I went to Anam and met with Javier Arias, I went to Parque Omar before they began the improvements in Parque Omar, I went to ORNATO. All these people looked at me like I had three eyeballs. Unfortunately here in Panamá today there is no importance on preserving trees, history or culture. Daily you see the way trash is thrown out the windows of cars, the way El Patrimonio is altered and destroyed, the corruption. For example as soon as there is a down pour we are flooded, "keep throwing your trash out wherever you want". Como va la cancion Es Un Pais Portatil. How many containers a day you reckon head out of here full of wood? Doesn't anyone see em when their filling the container full of logs? This is all a smoke screen, same as the drug busts. How much leaves the country?
