Martinelli Learned About Klebsiella Pneumoniae Carbapenemases (KPC) Outbreak On The News

HealthcarePanama's president Ricardo Martinelli said he didn't know anything about the antibiotic resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae Carbapenemases (KPC) bacteria until he heard about it on the news. In an interview given this morning during the channel 13 Telemetro news broadcast, Martinelli said these kinds of bacteria are present in every hospital, however he admitted the crises was mismanaged by the Office of Social Security from the very beginning. He said if organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization had been notified early on, then many deaths could have been prevented. He said the public should not be alarmed over the crisis currently facing the Arnulfo Arias Madrid Metropolitan Hospital Complex, referring to the people who have tested positive for bacteria. Martinelli said he does not agree with the position taken by former president Mireya Moscoso - who said the building should be demolished - but rather it should be rescued and not allowed to sink. He said no one wants to "privatize" the institution or healthcare in the country, but rather he wants to "make it efficient." (La Estrella)
