Now A Total Of 46 Deaths Due To Killer KPC Bacteria in Panama - Two More In The Past 24 Hours

HealthcareThe number of deaths related to the antibiotic resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae Carbapenemases (KPC) bacteria has been increased to 46, according to the Director of Medical Services of the Social Security Fund, Javier Diaz, who released this information on Friday, 19 August 2011. In a news conference, Diaz said in the last 24 hours there have been two additional deaths among patients who have been infected with the KPC bacteria. Diaz said one of the victims was on the list of 71 people who had tested positive for KPC, and the other victim was from a group of persons whose infection was detected after last 4 August 2011, when the special commission on KPC was established.

86 AFFECTED - Since the bacteria was detected at the Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid Metropolitan Hospital Complex of the Social Security Fund in December 2010, a total of 86 people have been infected with the bacteria, of which 46 have died, Diaz said. Yesterday, Thursday, 18 August 2011, the Third Superior Prosecutor of the Public Ministry, Sofanor Espinoza, reported deaths related to the KPC bacteria had increased to 44. (La Prensa)
