Court Hearing For Jean Figali and Mario Virzi Herrera Postponed

Crime & PunishmentOnce again the preliminary hearing against the Lebanese businessman Jean Figali and Mario Virzi Herrera for crimes against the economy which was scheduled to be held today, Friday, 7 October 2011 in the Twelfth Circuit Criminal Court, has been suspended. The move came after Jorge Zuniga, a defense lawyer for Mario Virzi Herrera, submitted a disability (saying his client was sick or otherwise unable to participate.) An alternative date was established for the hearing on 28 October 2011 at 9 am. The investigation against the founder of Group F. began in June 2010, after a report from the UAF said the businessman could be involved in alleged money laundering.

An arrest warrant was issued and Figali was arrested on 7 July 2010 in Chiriqui when he was found as the result of a police operation in the sector of Guabalá. On December 23, 2010, the court replaced preventative detention with "house arrest" and Figali was released from prison. Then last May the Second Superior Tribunal replaced "house arrest" with "country arrest" - meaning Figali can't leave Panama while he is awaiting trial. (Panama America)
