Riot At The La Joya Prison Complex in Pacora

Protests & Demonstrations#Panama - The Minister of Government, Roxana Mendez, confirmed to La Prensa there was an alert situation at the La Joya prison complex, located in the area of Pacora in the province of Panama. "In La Joyita prison inmates from the different pavilions wards have responded with threats and even gunshots to the activation last Thursday [October 13] of the system to block mobile phone signals," said the minister. Mendez said that according to information available as of 11:00 am on Saturday morning, the situation is under control but the agents of the National Police and the prison system are on alert, and they do not rule out the possibilities of further violent reactions. The minister did not want to provide details as to whether on not anyone was injured or killed in the riot, and said the Direction of the Prison System will issue a press release today with all of the details about what happened. The La Joya Prison Complex, comprising La Joya and La Joyita, houses the largest number of prisoners in Panama (about 7,348) - La Joyita alone has a population of 4,666 inmates and overcrowding of about 84%. Editor's Comment: Not only do the prisoners have cell phones (that they are not supposed to have) but someone also had a handgun if you can believe that. A police officer was shot in the leg, removed from the scene, treated, and he will be fine.
