"How Can I Get A Gig As A Line Handler On A Yacht Going Through The Canal?"

Feedback#Panama - By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received this morning via email: "Don -- I've been reading your posts on Panama-Guide and enjoy them a great deal. I wanted to contact you about the winter trip my girlfriend and I are planning to Panama in Feb. 2012. We plan on renting a Balboa condo for about 10 days. We live in/around Seattle and are active sailors. we would love to try and get a ride through the Canal as line handlers on a yacht during our visit. would like to converse with you about this. Email or a talk on Skype is good. Thanks for your attention to my inquiry. TS."

What's The Best Way To Do This? - I know there are people who post cards and fliers on the bulletin board at the end of the pier of the Balboa Yacht Club, but that only works if you're physically there to check. I would imagine one could call to ask at all of the different marinas on both sides to see if someone needs a line handler. As far as know there isn't any one source website or point of information where these kinds of things are discussed. There are several sailing related Yahoo! email groups that might help as well. And, one could post on a general interest group such as Americans in Panama and ask the 5,300+ members there - someone might know something. However I suspect the answer will revolve around the specific dates when you're going to be here in Feb 2012, and if there's a yacht going through on one of the days that you are both here and available to do it. If anyone has anything to add, please do so in the comments. Thanks.

On the Pacific side, post a notice on one of the bulletin boards at the Balboa Yacht Club and the Las Brisas and La Playita anchorages (look for where all the boats are anchored out). Put your phone number and/or email address on the notice and the boat owner will contact you. Or come to one of the regular cruiser get-togethers to meet boat owners in person. The best way is to listen to the Monday through Saturday Cruisers net on VHF 74 at 8:00AM. They discuss canal transits during the net and put out requests and offers for line handlers there. Having boating experience or personally knowing a boat owner will make it more likely you can get a position as a line handler.
I cannot speak to your options on the Colon side of the canal.

Hi Don, These folks should find a way to post a message at ShelterBay Marina along with BalboaYacht Club,Experienced sailors may even be paid to Line Handle along with their fare back to base(bus ticket). It is a important job,a few minutes of terror and the rest a treat!
There are Cruisers VHF networks in each area to pass the word...I believe Channel 72 at 8am in Colon....
