One Killed, 30 Injured in Bus Accident

#Panama - Penonomé Coclé - One person was killed and another 30 wer injured in an accident that occurred at 3:30 am this morning on Monday, 7 November 2011, on the Intern American Highway, in the city of Penonomé. The accident occurred when the driver of a bus from the Panama City to David route lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid something that was on the roadway. Because of this maneuver the bus overturned and crashed into a corotú tree. The bus left the province of Chiriqui at 11:00 pm yesterday, Sunday night. It was carrying 56 passengers, most of whom were asleep when the impact occurred. Ambulances from Aguadulce, Anton and La Pintada as well as the Fire Department from Penonomé arrived at the scene to help the passengers, some of whom were trapped inside the bus. The injured were taken to the Aquilino Tejeira Hospital. The authorities are investigating the causes of this accident, while residents and bus drivers in the area of Penonomé say the way the roadway was built is the main cause of the many accidents that occur at this point.
