USTR Meets With MICI in Panama On Implementation of FTA

Money Matters#Panama - The United States and Panama began on Wednesday the formal process of implementation of Free Trade Agreement, with a meeting between local authorities and representatives of the Office of United States Trade Representative (USTR), held in Panama City. The meeting, the second after the ratification of the FTA by Congress last October, was attended by the head of the delegation of the USTR, Ambassador Miriam Sapiro, the Minister of Commerce and Industry of Panama, Ricardo Quijano and his Deputy Minister of International Trade Negotiations Diana Salazar. Quijano said at the meeting there was a first exchange of information on topics such as the commitments as embodied in the FTA, according to an official press release from the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Panama. "It helped to know how we can advance the process of implementation of the FTA, and we agreed to use the exchange of email, video conferencing, and phone calls in order to continue, as well as face to face meetings," said Quijano.

For her part, Salazar said these meetings are intended to ensure that the commitments of both partners can be met once the treaty enters into force. Salazar said "we did not set a definite time of completion" for implementation." But they expressed the desire of both countries to have it as a priority item on the agendas of the two trading partners, in order to take less time, but in the most efficient way possible," said Salazar.

The U.S. Congress ratified the bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Panama and the United States on 12 October 2011, after the signing of the agreement by both governments in 2007, the year it was also endorsed by the National Assembly of Panama. (Prensa)

And so it begins or should I say, continues. The dismantling of Panama's sovereignty. It will be interesting to see who actually is the "partner" who gains the most from this agreement.
