Shamah Asks Vallarino's Party Members To Forget Politics For A Moment

PoliticsPanama's Minister of Tourism Solomon Shamah said democracy is not in danger, because no one can force a politician to resign, especially if the position is popularly elected, even if there were threats from the president. Shamah said President Martinelli told him he had not requested Bosco Vallarino to resign, who resigned from his position as the Mayor of Panama City yesterday morning. According to Shamah, Vallarino told the president he would resign because he was suffering from health problems, so Shamah asked the members of Vallarino's political party to forget politics for a moment and to focus on following his recovery. "Then there will be time to talk politics," said Shamah. He added while speaking in the channel 13 Telemetro morning news broadcast that Vice President Juan Carlos Varela only speaks of politics. Editor's Comment: And that's the party line this morning. I've seen about six or seven people give basically the same interview today. The talking points are;

  • Vallarino resigned of his own free will.
  • Vallarino resigned for health reasons.
  • There were no threats or intimidation.
  • The other politicians only talk about politics.
  • They should focus on Vallarino's health issues, and his speedy recovery.
  • We continue to do the work of the people.
