Indian Roadblock Causing Food Shortages in Panama City
The produce market in Panama City is empty because they do not have enough products to sell. The Inter American Highway has been closed for more than 20 hours, and there are more than 100 trucks carrying fruits and vegetables that are stuck in the traffic jam in the provinces of Chiriquí, Veraguas and Bocas del Toro. Besides the produce market, restaurants have been harmed by the protesting Indians who have closed the highway. It was learned that economic losses caused by the roadblocks could be more than $2 million dollars. (Dia a Dia)
Editor's Comment: The shelves are starting to get pretty bare in the produce market. There were live camera shots from the market on the morning television news broadcasts. The provinces on the other side of the roadblock grow the produce eaten in Panama City every day. Also, those areas are starting to run out of fuel, which is primarily delivered by truck. The pressure will be mounting on the government to "do something" to open the roadway. I suspect the government will wait until the people are demanding for them to take action, so that they don't look like evil repressive thugs.
